History


Dorbyl Heavy Engineering - DHE, (now trading as Heavy Engineering Vereeniging), was established in 1946 and is the oldest of the DCD-DORBYL business units. From a large and diversified company with over 5000 people, DHE has over the years become a more specialized unit focusing on the production of engineered, heavy mechanical equipment products in keeping with changing mining, steel and allied industry markets. Today, Heavy Engineering Vereeniging has a much smaller specialized staff complement, consisting mainly of highly skilled specialists and engineers to serve the global markets.

- Situated on 48,710 Ha.
- Manufacturing facility split between Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging.
- South works fabrication - 20,750 m² under cover with crane capacity ranging from 70 - 20 tons.
- North works fabrication - 4,630 m² under cover with carne capacity ranging from 60 - 20 tons.
- North works machining - 11,856 m² under cover with crane capacity ranging from 40 - 7 tons.
- Vanderbijlpark machining - 10,500m² under cover with crane capacity ranging from 100 - 20 tons.

Market Position


Heavy Engineering Vereeniging services largely the local and international Mining and Steel Industries, however, it also produces highly engineered products for specific, individualized application in the Material Handling, Metallurgic and Petrochemical Industries.

Through its specialist design and manufacturing capabilities and the global demand for quality-engineered heavy equipment, Heavy Engineering Vereeniging has captured a large percentage of the market share and effectively positioned itself as an industry leader.

It is the only company of its kind in South Africa with such highly specialized machining and fabrication facilities. Furthermore, it has worldwide alliances with major companies that are responsible for the design.

    Heavy Engineering Vereeniging’s main focus has been to manufacture according to the design and specific requirement of its customers. As a specialist manufacturer, Heavy Engineering Vereeniging works in close collaboration with process designers in the industry and pays special attention to providing cost-effective, budget sensitive solutions to its clients. Heavy Engineering Vereeniging is expanding its focus to include the manufacture of specific products for specific mining sectors. Furthermore, Heavy Engineering Vereeniging pays constant attention to growing its capacity and to developing specialized in-house products.

    Safety Requirements

    Heavy Engineering Vereeniging adheres to the highest safety, health and environment standards. It has a 5 star National Occupational Safety Accreditation rating to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all its people. A project is underway to achieve the OHSAS 18001 safety accreditation rating.

    A strict confidentiality policy is maintained with each client in order to protect design patents held by the client. Furthermore, security agreements are signed by all staff members in accordance with South African law. Although access to the factory is restricted, clients are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the facilities and procedures in order to gain a better understanding of Heavy Engineering Vereeniging’s manufacturing processes.

    Research and Development

    Heavy Engineering Vereeniging has shifted its focus to incorporate the expansion of the development and research arm of the business with the purpose of expanding its product base in order to offer clients additional services. Many of its research and development projects are being developed with individual clients.
