Investing in people
Dorbyl marine has been selected as one of the South African companies to participate in the Investors in People Program. Of the 2000 local companies that applied, only 40 were selected for this honour - and Dorbyl is the only engineering and marine company amongst them.
The project will run for three years and, once completed, will permit the company to add another important logo to their company profile.
Dorbyl has realized the need to invest in people and equip their staff with the necessary skills to deliver change. The Investors in People Program aims to ensure that people learn and keep learning because they realize that the secret of success comes from within.
"For no matter how much you invest in new equipment or new systems, the key to your success lies in the attitudes, outlook, skills and support of your people. It's your people who will help you respond to the pressure of a changing world and deliver the benefits you seek."
According to the UK-based initiative, the most successful companies will be those with the most skilled, flexible and committed people who can adapt to new ways of working.
As such Investors in People is a tool for managing change and for achieving success.

After negotiating with AAB to take over their marine electrical division, our electrical division, offers all electrical services to the marine industry ranging from general electrical services; repair to all electrical equipment; installing highly specialized control systems in vessels.
On the oilrig SSD as AAB we installed the Synpol-D Power management system for alternator and auxiliary diesel engines. This control unit provides automatic start-up of engines in Black Out conditions or under conditions when more load is required. In Black Out conditions the stand=by machine will start, run up to operational revolutions, check voltage and frequency then switch the alternator circuit breaker automatically to the switchboard. When more load is required by stand-by machine will start, check voltage and frequency and when the machines are running in synchronized conditions the alternator circuit breaker is switched in parallel with the others.
In another project on the Sea Fisheries Research Vessel, Africana, ten of AAB's DCS500 drives were chosen to control the three generator, bow thruster, trawl winch and two main propulsion motors. With the Freelance PLC Field controller, the operator is given maximum safety combined with easy handling of the power plant producing 2,2MW. Monitoring, alarm and event logging are some of the features of this highly integrated inter-active system. Two large LCD screens show status, graphics plus trends online.
