The last three months have been hectic with an increase in workforce from 120 to 470. Focus has also been shifting to encourage development of all employees and has seen the start of a few interesting projects.
Investors in People
Dorbyl Marine has gone through the first assessment for accreditation. Overall we have met 5 of the 12 criteria and an action plan has been put in place to achieve all these criteria by January 2003. Included in this action plan is a program to complete performance assessments of hourly employees to improve our workplace skills plan program. This has already been started and should be completed by the end of September 2002.
It was encouraging to note that all employees on all levels are aware of the company's objectives, results and future plans.
Another milestone reached
Two Peninsula Technikon students joined us on the 18th June 2002 as Engineers-in-Training. What is also unique about the intake is that our first female student has been employed in the position of mechanical engineering which indicates that we are steadily moving forward towards achieving our Equity Plan goals. |

Attaining artisanship

Congratulations to both Robert Landu (left) and Robert Raats (right) for passing their qualifying trade test. They were found competent in the boiler making and welding trades respectively.
Their trade tests were completed during August 2002 and we wish them well in their future careers.

What a six pack
Not intended as an April fool's joke, we introduced six new apprentices at Dorbyl Marine on the 1st April 2002. The trades include boiler making, welding, fitting and fitting and turning. Induction, safety and quality assurance training were completed in the first six weeks before they were sent to Wingfield Training Centre for ten weeks basic hand skills and welding technique training.
All of them are now back at work awaiting confirmation of acceptances from the Technical Colleges to attend theoretical classes over the next ten weeks. We officially welcome them aboard and hope that their stay at Dorbyl Marine is a prosperous and rewarding one.
